Description

The sloping vineyards of the Leistenberg are characterised predominantly by clay slate soils. This dry, blackish-grey slate is perfect for producing superbly elegant wines. Our characterful dry Riesling wines from these soils are therefore named after this ancient rock. Tonschiefer translates as clay slate. Age of vines 25 – 30 years. 100% selective hand harvest. Fermented and matured in stainless steel vats and large oak barrels

Tasting note

Characterful with superb finesse, this super focused wine is packed with pure fruit notes of white peaches, zesty lemons and grapefruit. A smoky, flinty minerality adds complexity and traction to this elegant Riesling.

Food pairing

Fresh sushi, dressed crab or a mouth-watering Choucroute!

About the producer

Gault Millau German ‘Winemaker of the Year’ in 1999, Helmut Dönnhoff has now relinquished the reigns of the estate to his equally dedicated and talented son, Cornelius. This is the most highly regarded cellar in the entire Nahe Valley and is deservedly thought of as one of the finest Riesling producers in the world. Helmut and Cornelius are convinced that their recent vintages show the power, intensity and minerality for which their wines have become so renowned.
