Description

The parcels of vines are situated at the bottom of the valleys, away from the seashore, offering the most warmth. Thanks to this location, the grapes of Banyuls achieve excellent maturity. The structure of the schist allows the vines’ roots to seek the resources it requires deep underground. As a result, the wines express freshness and finesse. The wine is fermented in vats. When approximately 100g/L of residual sugar remains during fermentation, the process is stopped with pure alcohol (99% ABV). It is then placed in 30hl oak casks. The maturing period lasts 14 months in an oxygen-free environment. As a result, it conserves its vinous characteristics and aromatic notes of fresh fruit.

Tasting note

Grenache is a variety with various berry aromas (cherry, black currant), stone fruit, licorice, and caramel. This is a genuine explosion of berry flavors (cherry, black currant). Boasting good concentration, it offers a rich and round palate with coated tannins.

About the producer

Madeloc is Pierre Gaillard’s estate in Collioure, supervised by his daughter Elise. This is a real paradise, with some of the vineyards ending directly at the Mediterranean. With a lot of granite and schist soil across the 29 hectares estate, the wines have a high level of minerality with subtle iodine notes. Pierre Gaillard had always been as fascinated by the rugged beauty of the Banyuls countryside as by the huge potential of the terroir. In 2002, he purchased the old estate of Pagès and worked closely with local growers Jean Baills and his son Mathieu, owners of their own 15ha vineyard in Banyuls. The combination of Baills’ knowledge of the terroir and Gaillard’s talents as a winemaker, as well as a well-equipped cellar, has resulted in a rejuvenation of both the vineyards and the wines.
